Country Singers Who Have Died in Aviation Accidents

On September 8, country musician Troy Gentry, part of the duo Montgomery Gentry, died in a South Jersey helicopter crash. Investigators believe that engine problems were the primary cause of the aviation accident. Part of being a successful musician is long periods of time traveling, often on airplanes. And tragically, Gentry is not the only popular musician who has died in an aviation accident. These types of accidents stretch back to the dawn of the era of commercial flight. This list, by no means exhaustive, details the lives and deaths of several country stars who left this world too soon. Patsy Cline died at the age of 30 in a plane crash in 1963. She was one of country’s first big female stars. Her plane crashed during a heavy downpour on her way to Nashville. The crash also killed Cowboy Copas, who rose to popularity in the 1940s, and Hawkshaw…

If an Autonomous Car Causes an Accident, Who is to Blame?

Autonomous cars are heralded as the Next Big Thing – for transportation and for vehicle safety. Most accidents result from human error, and autonomous vehicles take the human out of the equation. But if an autonomous car does cause a car accident – rare though those might be – who is responsible? According to Nashville Metro Council member Robert Swope, 1.5 million people die in car accidents every year. Of those, 90 percent result from human error. Should these cars, which some see as an inevitable sight on our roads, become widespread, not only could millions of lives be saved, but our transportation system could be revolutionized. Instead of spending upwards of $8.5 billion on something like light rail (though also important), a network of autonomous cars could provide much-needed assistance to our mass transit system. But what happens if you are injured by one of these vehicles? Liability in…

Is Carpooling Safer than Driving in Nashville?

Carpooling has many benefits. You save money on gas, you help the environment and you get access to carpool (HOV) lanes, which can drastically reduce your commuting time. But do these special carpool lanes prevent accidents by putting less cars on the road – or do they actually make roads more dangerous? There are two common forms of HOV lanes: those with physical barriers, and those without. Regardless of barriers, these HOV lanes create a speed differential that can contribute to accidents. Just like how car accidents often occur at interchanges, where cars are either speeding up or slowing down to enter or exit highways, the difference in speeds combined with the changing of lanes make HOV lanes prone to accidents. Of course, without barriers, the speed differential is the bigger problem. With barriers, it is the necessity for more interchanges that leads to car accidents. In Fact, a Texas…
