Tragically, on May 23, a Scott County man allegedly drove his car through a concert crowd at the Trail Ends campgrounds, killing a man in attendance.

According to WATE-TV, the incident allegedly occurred when the suspect, 42, a food vendor at the event, became upset and drove his vehicle through a field where about 50 people remained following a Trace Adkins performance. The television station reported that the incident killed one man, 52, from North Vernon, Indiana.

The man who allegedly crashed his vehicle was charged with criminal homicide and reckless endangerment, according to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses told WATE that the man was intentionally trying to hit people; he allegedly dragged at least one victim through a crowd, and the man died was attempting to help the person being dragged when he was struck. Three people were reportedly taken to the hospital after the incident for injury treatment.

An investigation into the crime is ongoing. The man who is suspected to have caused the incident remains in jail.

IF YOUR LOVED ONE IS INJURED DURING A CONCERT FESTIVAL, SPEAK TO OUR ATTORNEY

Although this incident remains under investigation, it should serve as a reminder that venues must make sure that they have safety measures in place to protect concertgoers and employees.

This includes making sure all vendors and employees are screened for possible violent crime histories, making sure all stages are safe and that the overconsumption of alcohol does not take place. Additionally, venues must have adequate security to prevent violent incidents and/or assaults from taking place.

In the case above, the victim’s family may be able to seek out claims against the venue and against the man charged in connection to the alleged crime. Venues that fail to protect guests from injury risks can be sued due to premises liability laws, which allow victims and family members to seek compensation following an incident that takes place in a public setting.
