fatal truck accident took the lives of a construction worker and a semi-truck driver in late September.

Charles Morgan was driving the tractor-trailer that crashed into a Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) truck around 3:30 am on I-75 in Bradley County. The tractor-trailer crashed the TDOT truck into Nicolas Feller, a construction worker who was putting reflective lenses on the road.

Then, the tractor-trailer crashed into the back of a Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) vehicle. Trooper Travis Ryans was sitting in the driver’s seat at the time. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time – THP protocol insists that all officers buckle up whenever they sit in a vehicle, whether it is in motion or not – and officers say the seatbelt saved his life. Morgan, who was transporting live chickens, and Feller both died in the accident.

THE “MOVE OVER LAW”

Troopers used the opportunity to remind all Tennessee drivers about the state’s “Move Over Law”, which states that all drivers must use caution and yield right-of-way to certain vehicles, including ambulances, fire trucks and construction vehicles.

“This crash could have been avoided by using caution when entering all construction zones,” said THP Lt. John Harmon. “By law, everyone is required to slow down or move over when they see construction workers and emergency vehicles.”
