A portion of Interstate 65 was shut down in both directions recently in Nashville following a multi-vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer.
According to WKRN-TV, the accident occurred on October 26, at around 10 p.m., when a tractor-trailer overturned and struck a median in the southbound lanes of the interstate. Debris from the crash spilled onto both sides of the interstate, striking several vehicles and causing secondary accidents.
The station reported that 11 vehicles were involved in the event, which remains under investigation. The roadway did not reopen until 5 a.m. the following day. At least four people sustained injuries and had to be transported to local hospitals for treatment.
A preliminary report suggests that the driver of the semi was attempting to merge onto the interstate from Vietnam Veterans Boulevard before colliding with the median. At least one vehicle caught fire during the series of crashes.
Truck Accidents Can Lead to Devastating Injuries and Death
Many truck accidents are caused by negligence on the part of either the driver or operator, or other drivers on the road. Driver errors, inattention, distractions, poor weather, mechanical defects and speeding or reckless driving can all contribute to truck accidents.
In addition to causing catastrophic injuries, about one in eight traffic deaths in America is the result of a truck accident.
