fatal car accident in South Nashville claimed the lives of a 4-year-old and a 28-year-old over Labor Day weekend, according to NewsChannel5.com.

Police say Crystal Maier drifted into oncoming traffic on Nolensville Road, delivered glancing blows to two cars and crashed head-on into another. Overall, there were five cars involved in the accident.

The child, 4-year-old Eileen Sorto, was thrown from the backseat. She died on the way to the hospital; Maier died at the scene. Neither were wearing seatbelts.

“If these two individuals had been restrained properly, there’s no doubt in my mind that they would be here today,” Lt. Richard Cash said.

Police are currently investigating the accident, and they believe that alcohol may have played a role. They said they found alcohol in Maier’s car.

Police arrested two people – a driver and passenger – for leaving the scene of the accident. The driver did not have a license, according to police officials.
