In 2013, the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) reported that there were more than 2,800 motorcycle crashes in the Volunteer State, with many resulting in death or personal injuries like spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, amputations and broken bones.

These motorcycle accidents occur for a number of reasons including negligent or reckless drivers—a Florida study in 2013 estimated that other vehicles on the road cause more than 50 percent of motorcycle crashes. Remember, if you cause a motorcycle accident in Tennessee, you can be held liable for any injuries or deaths that occur.

Aside from drivers allowing motorcyclists space, and avoiding distracted driving and checking their blind spots before making turns in order to prevent accidents, motorcyclists themselves can also take steps to avoid being in a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends the following tips, if you are a motorcyclist:

  • Never ride under the influence of alcohol
  • Avoid speeding and riding in adverse weather
  • Avoid tailgating
  • Avoid riding between lanes of slow moving or stopped traffic
  • Know and obey traffic laws, including ordinances in your community
  • Always use turn signals
  • Wear reflective clothing at night

EAST NASHVILLE MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT KILLS MAN

We bring up this subject because on August 3, a 30-year-old man was killed in an east Nashville motorcycle accident.

According to WKRN-TV, the crash occurred on the 500 block of south 14th Street. The man who was killed reportedly lost control of his motorcycle and struck an SUV that was parallel parking.

A preliminary investigation revealed that speed on the part of the motorcyclist and the failure to maintain the travel lane on the part of the SUV driver may have played a role in the crash.
