According to WBBJ-TV, a Humboldt city employee was killed on August 31 when a tree fell on him.

The television station reported that the victim, 70, a prominent resident who went by the nickname Rockin’ Chair, was injured working on a project on Viking Drive behind Humboldt High School.

Humboldt Mayor Marvin Sikes said that the workers were there to remove a “rotten tree.” Sikes said that the victim was pulling some vines out of the tree when it fell on him.

The victim was airlifted to a Memphis hospital after the incident where he later died. Many in the area said they had known the victim since his childhood. “His personality, you would never forget the guy, and then with a name like ‘Rockin’ Chair,’ you’ll never forget who he is,” fellow Humboldt city worker Justin Rehmert said, according to WBBJ.

The accident remains under investigation. WBBJ reported that it is the first time a city employee in Humboldt had died in a workplace accident.

YOU HAVE RIGHTS FOLLOWING A FATAL WORKPLACE ACCIDENT

As we noted in this April blog post, if your loved one is killed in an industrial incident or workplace accident, you should speak to our Nashville attorney.

Depending upon the circumstances surrounding your loved one’s death, you may have a right to hold an employer liable via a wrongful death or personal injury lawsuit. Additionally, you may be able to obtain certain workers’ compensation benefits.

While no amount of money will ever bring your loved one back to life following a fatal workplace accident, it may be able to help your family recover financially.
