WTVF-TV reported recently that a man has been charged in connection to a DUI crash in Nashville that critically injured a passenger in his vehicle last month.
According to WTVF, 28-year-old Juan Garcia was driving a Honda coupe when it ran off the side of a Bell Road near Mt. View Road around 1:05 a.m., on December 30, 2013. The car eventually struck an MTA bus sitting at a station stop, which caused the vehicle to flip.
A passenger in the Honda, 23-year-old Omar Garcia, was critically injured and taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. WTVF reported that it is not clear whether the two occupants of the vehicle were related.
Juan Garcia reportedly suffered minor injuries. Police reports indicated that he smelled like alcohol and showed strong indicators of impairment. A blood sample was taken from Juan, and an investigation into the crash is ongoing. He was charged with driving under the influence and driving without a license, although further charges could be forthcoming.
This case may be another tragic reminder of the dangers of drunk driving around the holidays. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve in 2011, 931 people were killed in drunk driving crashes nationwide.
