A car crash that occurred in September 2012 has claimed another victim, this one an 8-year-old boy named Collin Lane. He passed away at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, four months after a motor vehicle accident that killed two children and injured another. According to police, drug and alcohol charges are pending against the driver, 47-year-old Theresa Hackett.

Police believe that Hackett was driving on the left side of the road when she ran off the pavement. She overcorrected, which caused the vehicle to spin out of control, flip over three times and crash into a tree on the right side of the road. Also killed in the accident were six-year-old Jasmine Lane and 11-year-old Preston Lane. Hackett and nine-year-old Josh Lane were later released from the hospital. Police believe all passengers in the car were wearing seatbelts, but the U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommends that children between the ages of 4 and 8 years old should be secured in a booster seat system, which adjusts the seatbelt to provide maximum protection to children in the event of an accident.

This accident appears to be the result of one woman’s reckless decisions, but proper restraints are extremely important for children. Collin’s death from his injuries has brought this story back into the news. It is a tragic reminder of the responsibility we have as drivers on the road to be cautious and safe. A moment of negligence, a decision to “drive anyway” or settling for improper safety can be the difference between life and death.
