Tragically, according to the Tennessean, a Nashville Christian School football player was killed on August 30 on his way home from practice in a car accident.

The news source reported that the player was traveling with two other Eagle teammates on Forest Crossing, near Joelton, when he lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle reportedly traveled off the road and into trees, with the majority of the crash affecting the driver’s side door.

The two passengers in the vehicle were both hospitalized with injuries. Nashville Christian football coach Jeff Brothers said that he was in shock after the accident occurred. As of last week, he told the Tennessean that he was still trying to process that accident, which remains under investigation.

The teen that died was a standout wide receiver and defensive back, scoring seven touchdowns last year.

TALKING TO YOUR TEEN ABOUT SAFE DRIVING HABITS

Although it is unclear what caused this accident to occur, it should serve as a reminder than you should talk to you teens about safe driving practices.

Many states, including Tennessee, have graduated license programs that limit the number of passengers teens can have in vehicles that they are driving, to avoid issues with distractions. Additionally, there are regulations about the times of the day when teens are allowed to operate vehicles.

If you have a teen driver at home, remember, if he or she causes an accident, you can both be held liable. Talk to your kids about avoiding dangerous habits like speeding, distracted driving and/or drunk driving.

Sadly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2011, about seven teens died each day in the U.S. in car accidents. Even though teens represent only 14 percent of the U.S. population, as a group, they account for about 30 percent of the total number of people injured in vehicle accidents each year.
