As Takata Recall Proceeds, Some Drivers Left with Unsafe Cars

The Takata airbag recall is the largest recall in United States history. Over 40 million cars across the U.S. are thought to be affected by the defective airbags. The defect can cause airbag inflators to explode, spraying deadly metal shrapnel. To date, 11 people have died and more than 100 have been injured by Takata airbags. But despite the big push for people to have their vehicles replaced, the lines are backing up. Take the story of Amy Whittaker Wright, for example. In July of last year, she received a notice that her Nissan Versa could have potentially deadly passenger airbags. She was told to avoid letting passengers ride in her car, and has been struggling with increased insurance premiums on her second vehicle because she has exceeded the mileage limit due to the limited use of her Versa. Defective Auto Parts: Takata Airbag Inquiry Expands

According to the New York Times, the federal investigation into the recall of defective Takata airbags has expanded beyond driver and front-seat passenger devices to include side airbags. The newspaper noted that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating all Takata airbag models now. The airbags can allegedly explode violently during crashes and spray vehicle occupants with metal shrapnel. As of last week, more than 19 million cars made by 12 automakers had been recalled to fix defects, which have been linked to at least eight deaths worldwide and dozens of injuries. The Times noted that so far, the recalls have involved older vehicles, but recent concern over side airbag inflators has raised questions over whether recall efforts should be expanded. According to the newspaper, this summer the NHTSA requested information from Volkswagen about the rupture of a side airbag in a 2015 Tiguan model, which may have…

What is Takata Doing to Raise Awareness over Airbag Defects?

According to The Detroit News, airbag manufacturer Takata plans to launch an ad campaign to raise awareness about its defective products. The defective airbags have been linked to eight deaths and more than 100 injuries in America, as they can reportedly explode and spray metal shrapnel at vehicle occupants. As of last week, about 32 million vehicles had been recalled in the U.S. by 11 automakers, even though it is estimated that only about 2 million people had brought their cars in for repairs. According to the News, Takata settled to the campaign through an agreement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The agency has said it is imperative that vehicle owners are aware they need to have defective airbags replaced. As a part of the campaign, Takata is expected to launch the website AirbagRecall.com to help push owners to get vehicles repaired. Additionally, there will be a…
