Will This New ELD Mandate Prevent Truck Accidents?

Some Nashville truckers are speaking out against a new mandate that could mean safer roads for other drivers – but why? The mandate in question is allegedly intended to reduce the rate of drowsy driving among truck drivers, thus reducing truck crashes. Driver fatigue is a major problem in the industry, in part due to companies that incentivize drivers to drive longer, drive faster and haul more. While regulations do exist preventing drivers from driving too long or too fast, there are also ways around those regulations. Falsifying driver logs is one of those. Electronic logging devices (ELDs) are already in use by some companies to keep accurate tabs on truck drivers and ensure they do not violate federal regulations on their routes. Nashville Jury Weighs in On Truck Accident Involving Meth

The trial of truck driver Benjamin Brewer will come to a close soon. Brewer’s trial has been pushed back several times, most recently from October 17 to January 22nd. A jury will be selected from Nashville on January 18th. Brewer is charged with six counts of vehicular homicide for a crash on I-75 in 2015 that killed six people and injured four more. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the accident happened when Brewer failed to slow for traffic. He smashed into the backs of several vehicles, causing a chain-reaction crash. Reportedly, Brewer had methamphetamine and amphetamine in his system at the time of the crash. The investigation of the crash also revealed that he did not take required rest breaks and was likely fatigued. Fiery Truck Accident Shuts Down Lanes on I-65

Interstate 65 south of Nashville closed down on October 9 after a fiery truck crash killed one person and injured several others. It took more than 14 hours for crews to clean up the devastating scene. The accident happened when two cars traveling northbound, a Nissan sedan and a Jeep, crossed the median into southbound traffic. The Nissan crashed head-on into a Hyundai, stopping both vehicles in the southbound lanes. The Jeep ran head-on into a tractor-trailer, sending both vehicles off road. The driver of the Jeep died. Two other victims were airlifted to the hospital for treatment, and two more were transported via ambulance. It is currently unknown why the two vehicles crossed into the southbound lanes.
