Why Are These Nursing Homes Being Closed?

New Beginnings Care, a Tennessee-based nursing home company with multiple facilities in different states, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this year when its facilities started closing one by one. The facilities are closing because states are refusing to pay Medicare and Medicaid payments due to the company’s “ongoing failure to address continuing deficiencies within the facilities.” Most recently, a facility in Georgia closed down after inspectors reported the “squalid conditions.” According to the reports, regulators discovered five out of the nine lavatories were broken for at least two weeks before discovered. The broken toilets were located in a locked unit that contained 29 patients who suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. One resident locked in that unit screamed and pleaded with the inspector to let them out because it smelled so terrible.
