Work Zone Dangers: Nashville Construction Worker Struck by Car

Construction workers who work on roads put their lives on the line every day. Proximity to traffic means that one wrong move by a driver could end in severe injury or death for the worker. For one Tennessee construction worker, this truth hit close to home in January. The man was working on Interstate 440 and placed a sign out at night by the road. A white pickup truck drifted a tad too far over the white line and struck the sign. The sign then hit the worker in the leg, causing injuries that required X-rays to determine whether bones were broken. Is TDOT Doing Enough to Protect Its Workers from Fatal Road Construction Accidents?

A Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) worker died last month in a fatal work zone accident on State Route 54. The worker was flagging traffic around the maintenance crew working on the route when he was struck by a vehicle. This is the second TDOT worker to die in a work zone accident in three months. How Did This Construction Worker Sustain Serious Injuries?

Earlier this year, the top of a semi-truck smashed into a scaffold in a road construction accident. Photos from the accident show the top of the truck peeled away like the top of a sardine can when the truck struck the platform. Two of the four workers on the platform at the time of the incident were injured, one with catastrophic injuries sustained when he fell off the platform and barely missed oncoming highway traffic. When the construction manager spoke to Nashville News Channel 5, he stressed to drivers to pay attention to their surroundings. “When you see blue lights flashing and you see construction equipment and people out there, keep an eye out.” How Drivers Can Help Keep Road Construction Workers Safe Let’s face it. Roads don’t last forever and with Nashville’s population increasing, changes must be made to highway infrastructure. That said, road construction crews take on a…
