In June, Toyota Motor Corporation announced that it would recall an additional 2.86 million vehicles globally due to Takata airbag defects.
The announcement includes vehicles produced between April-December 2008, including Corolla, Matrix, Tundra pickup, Sequoia and Lexus SC430 convertible models. Although the number is being questioned by safety experts who say that there are more, Takata has announced that it produced about 34 million defective airbags worldwide.
Aside from Toyota, the Takata airbag recall has included models made by Honda, General Motors, Mazda, Ford, Mitsubishi, BMW, Nissan, Subaru and Chrysler. Recently, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it had updated its recall database to include a complete list of vehicles recalled due to defective Takata airbags. You can visit the agency’s website by clicking here. Through the database provided, you can search to see if your vehicle is involved in a recall by entering its VIN.
The defective airbags can reportedly explode and spray metal shrapnel at passengers during crashes. There have been multiple personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits filed nationwide, by victims and family members who claim that they have been affected by the products.
The NHTSA is still investigating Takata to conclude if it has been truthful when it comes to the number of vehicles that need to be repaired.
