According to WTVF-TV, a teenager was killed and three other people were injured in an October 15 car accident in Maury County.

The television station reported that the accident occurred on Mount Olivet Road at King Road, around 6:30 p.m. The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) said that a 17-year-old male driver, who was not identified, was driving north on Mount Olivet Road in a 1997 Nissan Sentra with two other teens in the car, when  he crossed the center line into the path of a 1997 Chevrolet S10 in the southbound lanes.

The front seat passenger in the Sentra, 15-year-old Kane Ragsdale, was killed. The THP said that he was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver of the vehicle and 17-year-old passenger Dillon J. Borrego were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but their conditions were unknown, according to WTVF.

The driver of the S10, 28-year-old Adam Lance, was also injured and taken to Maury County Regional Hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt, according to reports. The THP said that speed was believed to be a factor in the crash and that charges are pending.

Speed-Related Car Crashes

The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that speed is involved in about one-third of fatal car accidents, and is the third leading contributing factor to crashes. According to the NSC, more than 13,000 people die each year in speed-related crashes. In addition, speeding is a factor in more than 20 percent of accidents in construction zones on highways.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that speed-related crashes cost society over $40 billion annually and that young males are the most at risk to be involved in these types of accidents. According to NHTSA data, in 2007, 39 percent of male drivers age 15-20 who were involved in fatal crashes were speeding at the time of the crash.
