Will McKamey, running back for Grace Christian Academy and son of the coach, was airlifted from a game on Friday, October 23 in South Pittsburg after sustaining a brain injury. McKamey received an outpouring of support from his friends and the community. Pastor Matt Mercer held a prayer service at 4:24 the next day in honor of McKamey’s jersey number (24).

McKamey’s mother sent a text saying that she was optimistic about her son’s recovery.

“It’s a very serious brain injury but God has been faithful and he should make a full recovery,” Kara McKamey said.

The most recent reports say that McKamey will be discharged from a medical center in Chattanooga and cleared for all activities, even football, within a few weeks. He did not require surgery. His dad Randy McKamey sent a text to news outlets that said:

“What a scary time for such a strong athlete but it just goes to show you the power of prayer and how almighty our God really is!”

McKamey is committed to playing for the U.S. Naval Academy when he graduates. He has been named All-State three times, and with a 4.3 grade point average, he is a serious contender for valedictorian.

We are thankful that McKamey is on the road to recovery and that he will still be able to live out his dream. We caution all athletes about the dangers of traumatic brain injuries and the risks they entail. Subsequent injuries often cause more severe damage.
