Interstate 24 was completely shut down near Old Hickory Boulevard after a FedEx semi-truck hit another vehicle. This set off a chain reaction that ended with one car underneath a separate semi-truck and another car on fire. One driver sustained severe head injuries and three others were taken to the hospital.
According to a witness, the FedEx truck was weaving in and out of traffic prior to the collision. Metro police and the highway patrol investigated the cause of this Tennessee truck accident and cited fatigued driving as a primary factor.
Fatigued Truck Drivers Are Dangerous on the Road
Semi-trucks are dangerous enough as it is. However, when a tired driver gets behind the wheel of an 80,000-pound vehicle, the consequences can be catastrophic. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, semi-trucks account for approximately 4 percent of all vehicles on the road, but are involved in more than 11 percent of all traffic fatalities.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, truck driver fatigue causes 13 percent of all fatal truck accidents. Studies show a lack of sleep causes the following:
- A decrease in alertness
- Impaired memory
- Diminished ability to process information effectively
- A weakened immune system
- Double the risk of sustaining an on-the-job injury
Losing even one and a half hours of sleep results in up to a 32 percent decrease in alertness. That said, when a fatigued driver is experiencing these effects behind the wheel, they are putting other drivers at risk for a fatal truck accident.
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for trucking companies to put pressure on drivers to deliver loads as quickly as possible, regardless of the consequences. As a result, truck drivers have been known to drive too many hours consecutively. The government has tried to combat truck driver fatigue by imposing restrictions on the number of hours truck drivers are allowed to be on the road. However, these restrictions are not always complied with. If you have been injured in a Tennessee truck accident, it is important that you consult with an attorney who can help determine your rights moving forward.
