On January 12, a single-vehicle motor vehicle accident in Clarksville, Tennessee killed a truck driver. It appears that malfunctioning equipment caused this tragic accident, but investigators are still trying to understand exactly what went wrong.

Responders believe that Carroll Hall, who was 66, was driving a front-end loader truck on Frosty Morn Drive when the loader moved forward unexpectedly on the trailer. The loader continued to slide until it pressed against the truck’s cab, which trapped Hall inside the vehicle. He died at the scene. Rescue crews were unable to remove Hall’s body from the damaged cab, and eventually had to call in a crane from nearby Hopkinsville, Kentucky to do the job.

Truck drivers take on long hours and drive unwieldy vehicles. They must perform routine inspections of their vehicles, checking to make sure brakes, lights and tires are in working order. They must also ensure that their cargo is secured. However, if a serious malfunction or unexpected break occurred after the truck passed a routine inspection, the trucking company could be at fault. It is the responsibility of the company to ensure that vehicles are in safe, workable condition. A truck accident is dangerous to not only the driver, but also other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
