According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 2012 was one of the more deadly years on record for Tennessee drivers. Statistics show that 1,002 people died in car accidents last year, 72 more than in 2012.

On a state level, Tennessee officials work with the Tennessee Integrated Traffic Analysis Network (TITAN), an organization that tracks crash data. State officials are teaming up with this group to figure out what is causing these accidents, why the numbers are going up. According to Andy Smith, sheriff of Bradley County, many of these car accidents could be avoided. He blames the increased numbers on:

  • Speeding
  • Inattention to the road and other drivers
  • Not wearing seatbelts
  • Talking, texting and unsafe use of electronic devices while driving

With TITAN, Tennessee officials are working on targeted approaches to make driving safer for everyone on the roads around the state. According to Smith, “we would like people to slow down, pay attention to what they are doing, think about other people besides them and the vehicle, and get home safely.”
