The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) reported that a fatal truck accident in Greene County shut down Interstate 81 for five hours and killed one person on September 16.

According to WJHL-TV, a UPS double-tractor trailer on the northbound side of I-81 hit the back of a pickup truck towing a camper near mile marker 18. The UPS truck also hit a guardrail and caught on fire, while the pickup truck overturned after striking a guardrail.

The station reported that packages from the UPS truck were scattered across the median and roadway. The driver of the tractor-trailer, James Berl Tacy, Jr, 67, Covington Virginia, died in the crash.

The pickup truck driver, Kevin J. Bowling, 60, and his passenger Pamela R. Bowling, 57, both of Johnson City, were injured. A representative with the THP said that an investigation into the crash is ongoing. A man stuck in traffic told WJHL-TV that it took him “almost five hours to get from just south of the crash site through the detour route on Highway 11E to his home in Unicoi County.”

It will be interesting to see what the results of an investigation into this crash determine. If you are ever injured in a truck accident, you should remember to stay calm and trust in God. Death and serious personal injuries including traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injuries, amputation and broken bones often result from truck accidents.
