Did you know that the number of fatal bicycle accidents in the U.S. appears to be on the rise?

According to the Washington Post, there was a 16 percent increase in the number of cyclists killed in bicycle accidents between 2010 and 2012. The number reportedly grew from 621 cyclists killed nationwide in crashes with vehicles in 2010 to 722 in 2012.

The trend is concerning to safety advocates, as the numbers had been decreasing every year since 1975. The Post reported that accidents still occur mostly among men—88 percent of the victims in fatal 2012 accidents were male.

Additionally, it was reported that nearly two-thirds of the people who were killed in bicycle accidents were not wearing helmets and had a blood-alcohol concentration of .08 or higher.
