A 20-year-old Conyers man was killed near Nashville on August 21 when his Ford Focus crashed into an SUV.

According to the Rockdale News, Brent Rose, a 2012 graduate of Heritage High School, was heading west on Tennessee Highway 76, when he reportedly stopped at a sign and made a left hand turn, not seeing an oncoming 2004 Buick Ranier SUV.

Rose was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, where he died from his injuries. The driver of the SUV, 25-year-old Kayla Miller, of Adams, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Gateway Medical Center.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to authorities, but Miller was allegedly found to be under the influence of drugs and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Although many people think that DUIs involve only alcohol, they can also involve driving under the influence of any drugs including marijuana, cocaine or prescription drugs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) 2007 National Roadside Survey, more than 16 percent of weekend, nighttime drivers tested positive for illegal, prescription or over-the-counter medications. Of these people, more than 11 percent tested positive for “illicit drugs”, or illegal drugs.
