According to WKRN-TV, on October 26, a wrong-way driver was critically injured in an accident on Interstate 40 in Bellevue.

The news outlet reported that the crash occurred at around 2 a.m. near the Old Hickory Boulevard exit, when a wrong-way vehicle collided with a box truck on the westbound side of the interstate.

Prior to the crash, police received reports from other drivers about a wrong-way vehicle traveling around mile marker 193. However, they were unable to stop the driver before the accident occurred. The wrong-way driver, 45, a Liberty resident, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition following the crash.

The box truck driver suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the accident scene. Police said there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol recovered the site of the accident, which remains under investigation.

As we reported earlier this year, wrong-way accidents can occur for a variety of reasons including drunk driving, debris in roadways, defective vehicle products and confused drivers.

DATA SHOWS THAT ALCOHOL IS INVOLVED IN MANY NASHVILLE WRONG-WAY ACCIDENTS

WKRN mentioned in its report about the accident that it is the second serious wrong-way crash to occur off the interstate in Bellevue since May, when two people died in a crash. Additionally, the station reported that in 2009, a driver died in a wrong-way crash in the same area.

The station reported that Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) data from 2013-2014 showed that seven wrong-way crashes occurred in the five-county Nashville-area including Davidson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson counties. Of those crashes, 57 percent involved alcohol use.
