A three-car accident in Clarksville on September 19 sent three people to the hospital, while a teenage driver has been charged with drunk driving.
According to the Clarksville Leaf Chronicle, the accident occurred on Purple Heart Parkway at around 8:45 a.m., when Patrick Givens, 19, was driving north and hit the passenger side of a minivan at the intersection of Lafayette Road and Highway 374.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) reported that the minivan was carrying mentally disabled clients of Progressive Directions and was attempting to turn left from Highway 374 to Lafayette Road.
Two passengers and the driver of the van were taken to Gateway Medical Center. One victim reportedly suffered a broken hip and another suffered a broken arm. Givens was driving a 1999 Honda Civic with a 24-year-old passenger, and was charged with driving under the influence and underage consumption, according to the Leaf Chronicle.
Everyone in the crash was wearing a seatbelt. A witness and reporter emailed the Leaf Chronicle to discuss Givens’s alleged erratic driving. He said he witnessed the Civic travelling at speeds of 55 mph.
“I was passed on the right shoulder by a driver in a white Honda Civic doing a high rate of speed,” Leaf Chronicle reporter Philip Grey said in an e-mail. “The driver of the white Honda Civic then swerved back onto the roadway and began to dart between traffic to the front of me, at which point I immediately called 911 to report the driver.”
A representative with Progressive Directions said that the facility would work with the victims of the crash. “There’s going to be some emotional aspects to it. There’s going to be some confusion as to why this happened, and then to try and explain why something like this took place may take longer to explain to them rather than to you or I,” Jay Albertia told the Leaf Chronicle.
