Today is Christmas Eve, and we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. This is a very special time of year as we reflect upon our Savior’s birth and take time to show our loved ones how important they are to us. Sadly, car accident statistics show that accidents tend to happen around the holidays, and we urge everyone to show a little extra caution between now and New Year’s.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation:

  • In 2008, 420 people died on Christmas in traffic accidents
  • On average, 414 people die in Christmas car accidents each year since 1982
  • Since 1982, alcohol has been involved in 42 percent of fatal car accidents on Christmas. For the rest of December, alcohol played a role in just 28 percent of fatal auto accidents.

You can prevent holiday traffic accidents this year by taking a few extra precautions:

  • Designate a driver. If you plan to drink, arrange for public transportation, designate a driver or call a cab.
  • Establish a cutoff. If you are hosting a holiday party, stop serving drinks an hour before the party ends, and make sure you do not serve minors. Premises liability law states that you may be responsible for overserving someone if he or she causes a car accident.
  • Drive as little as possible. You may be sober, but that will not be true for other drivers. Limit your time on the road as much as you can.

We hope you have a wonderful and blessed Christmas this year. If something awful does happen to you or a loved one on the road, we might be able to help with the recovery. Call (615) 866-3938 for a free consultation.
