motor vehicle accident in West Tennessee ended in three deaths on January 20. Police report that only one vehicle was involved in the accident, which took place on Route 76 in Haywood County. None of the three men killed in the accident appear to have been wearing seatbelts, and police believe this may have contributed to their deaths.

The three men killed were Eddie L. West, Martavius Robinson and Jarves Gause. West and Robinson were 23 years old and Gause was 24 years old. Police are still investigating the accident, but it appears the car veered off the road, down a steep embankment and crashed into a tree. Whatever the cause of the accident, it is tragic that these deaths may have been prevented if the driver and passengers had been wearing seatbelts.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), wearing a seatbelt reduces the rate of serious injuries and deaths in car accidents by about 50 percent. In some circumstances, air bags can help prevent injuries as well, but they should never be considered a substitute for seatbelts. The CDC also states that adults between the ages of 18-34 are less likely to use seatbelts than older adults or children. Sadly, all three deceased young men were in this age group.
