According to the Ashland City Times, a Nashville man was killed on June 5 in a fiery car crash on Highway 12 near Lewis Perry Road just outside of Ashland City. The paper reports that James L. Guest, 42, was traveling north on Highway 12 in a 1998 Isuzu Rodeo about 9:30 p.m., when the crash occurred.

The Time reports that Guest failed to maintain control of his car as he was negotiating a curve, overcorrected, and crashed. His vehicle left the roadway and went into a deep ditch, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Guest’s vehicle struck some trees and then burst into flames, trapping him inside the vehicle, troopers reported. The agency said that Guest had not been drinking and was not wearing a seatbelt. Because Guest was burned so badly, it took investigators several days to identify his body.

Overcorrecting occurs when a person over steers in reaction to an event and loses control of his or her vehicle. This action often leads to fatal accidents and rollover crashes, as drivers and passengers are ejected from vehicles.

Although it may be hard, if you find yourself in a situation where you have to react quickly while driving, remember to stay calm—don’t let panic takeover your judgment. It is important to keep your foot off the break and off your accelerator and ease into any turn or movement.
