A 95-year-old Nashville woman was killed when she was struck by an SUV while walking on September 5.

According to WTVF-TV, Elisabeth Neuss died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Neuss was allegedly struck by an SUV around 10 a.m. while walking on the sidewalk along Harding Pike near the intersection of Woodlawn Drive.

“She was walking down the sidewalk, so she wasn’t in the road,” Sergeant Harold Burke with the Metro Nashville Police Department told WTVF. “She was perfectly within her right to be walking on the sidewalk.”

The driver of the SUV, 59-year-old Richard Regen, Jr., allegedly told police he did not see Neuss. As of last week, charges were still pending against Regen.

According to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, 1,381 people were involved in pedestrian accidents in Tennessee in 2012. A major cause of pedestrian accidents is distracted driving. Aside from death, pedestrian accidents can result in broken bones, paralysis, lacerations, amputations, and traumatic brain injuries.
