The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle reported that three vehicles were involved in a car accident on February 21 on the U.S. Highway 41A Bypass when a driver crossed into oncoming traffic.
According to the paper, Margaret L. Mayfield, 43, of Clarksville, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe west on the bypass when she crossed over and hit an eastbound 1999 Ford Expedition driven by Clarksville’s Shelly L. Gerlach. Mayfield then hit an eastbound 2005 Chevrolet Malibu driven by James C. Sanders, 59, also of Clarksville. Mayfield’s Tahoe came to rest in the ditch against a utility pole.
Sanders’ reportedly attempted to avoid Mayfiend’s Tahoe, but was hit, causing the Malibu to leave the roadway and flip over in a ditch.
Following that initial set of crashes, Daniel L. Newell, 22, of Ashland City, was avoiding the vehicles involved when his 2003 Chevrolet Silverado was hit by a tire from Mayfield’s Tahoe that came off during the collisions, according to the Leaf-Chronicle.
The paper reported that Mayfield was taken by Lifeflight helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, while the others were taken to Gateway Medical Center by ambulance. Details on their conditions were unknown, as of last week.
The accident remains under investigation.
