Tragedy can strike at any time on the roadway—in some cases, a driver can obey the rules of the road and still be involved in a fatal crash.

Sadly, on October 3, four members of a Kentucky family were killed in a six-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 in Wilson County.

According to WKRN-TV, the crash occurred around 7:15 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the interstate near mile marker 232 in Lebanon. The Tennessee Highway Patrol reported that two vehicles were apparently stopped on the interstate when four cars crashed into them from behind.

WKRN reported that Monica Cruce, 43, of Benton, Kentucky, was killed, along with her husband Michael and their two teenage sons. Four other people involved in the accident were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for injury treatment.

The THP is investigating why the cars were stopped on the interstate. It was reported that 24-year-old Chase Fakes of Lebanon was charged with driving under the influence, although his role in the crash remains unclear.

If you lose a loved one in a vehicle accident that was caused by another driver’s negligence, you should pursue a wrongful death lawsuit. In Tennessee, two criteria are used to establish wrongful death claims:

  • Was a person’s death was brought about because of the disregard of someone else
  • What is the value of the loss of love, care, guidance, supervision, comfort, household assistance and general social structure of the loved one who died

If your loved one provided you with support, you can seek the recovery of both economic and non-economic damages. This can be incredibly helpful for grieving loved ones who have to pay for burial and medical costs associated with the death of a family member.
