Over the past couple of months, we have warned readers to be on the lookout for vehicles while they are walking, as the Nashville-area has been ranked as one of the most dangerous places in the country for pedestrian accidents.

As a whole, Tennessee was ranked as the 11th most dangerous state for pedestrians, with 800 deaths from 2003 to 2012. Interestingly, the Nashville metro area was ranked as the 15th most dangerous place in the country for pedestrians.

Pedestrian accidents lead to deaths, as well as catastrophic injuries like paralysis, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, broken bones and amputations.

Sadly, on September 22, an elderly woman was struck by a vehicle and critically injured at the intersection of Abbott Martin Road in the Green Hills area.

According to WKRN-TV, the woman, 85-year-old Grace Mason, was in the crosswalk when a 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche driven by a 17 year old struck her. The station reported that the driver said that he did not see Mason as he was making a turn in the intersection. Mason had the right-of-way at the time of the crash, according to WKRN.

Investigators said that a failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is the primary contributing factor to the accident. Mason was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment.

CAN I FILE A LAWSUIT FOLLOWING A PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT?

Sadly, even if you are following posted signals and walking in crosswalks, you can still be struck by a vehicle if you are on foot. If this happens to you or your loved one, you must hold the driver liable for his or her recklessness and file an injury or wrongful death lawsuit.

Our attorney has obtained million dollar verdicts and settlements for the victims of negligent drivers. Call us today if you have been injured or you have had a loved one killed in a pedestrian accident.
