On April 7, a multi-vehicle crash led to injuries for four people, including a toddler, in south Nashville. Bell Road near Harbor Lights Drive was shut down while investigators surveyed the scene of the accident.

The chain reaction car accident started when a black car crossed the double yellow line in the center of the road and grazed an oncoming vehicle. The black car then crashed head-on into an approaching pickup truck.

Investigators interviewed the driver of the black car, who told them that he had dozed off after working all night.

Drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Studies on the subject have shown that a sleep-deprived driver has similar driving characteristics to an impaired driver. They both have slower reaction times, reduced alertness and attentiveness and hindered decision-making skills.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates 100,000 police-reported motor vehicle accidents every year are the result of driver fatigue. This results in 71,000 injuries and 1,150 deaths. The figures may be even higher than reported because of the difficulty of attributing crashes to sleepiness.

If you have been injured by a drowsy driver, then you deserve justice. The other driver must be forced to take responsibility for his or her unsafe actions. Contact a skilled personal injury attorney to schedule a free consultation.

Davis’ Words of Wisdom: Commercial vehicle operators are more likely to be in drowsy driving accidents than other drivers.
