According to the Tennessean, speed is suspected as a contributing factor in a fatal Wilson County car crash on Interstate 40 that killed a Lebanon mother.

The fiery accident occurred on December 2. The victim, who was a hairstylist, was allegedly driving a BMW X5 that ran off the side of the roadway into a median, causing it to turn upside down and catch fire.

“The early preliminary information indicates that speed was the causative factor,” THP representative Lt. Bill Miller said, according to the Tennessean. “The THP report isn’t yet complete. An estimated speed wasn’t given.”

The victim’s two children, ages seven and five, were also in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Thankfully, both were listed in stable condition at area hospitals following the incident. The woman was declared dead at the scene of the accident.

This accident may be a tragic reminder of how dangerous it can be to speed. In March, we discussed how speeding plays a role in fatal accidents—the U.S. Department of Transportation reports that this reckless action is among the leading causes of fatal vehicle crashes in America.

According to the agency, speeding plays a role in about 30 percent of all fatal car accidents and is a contributing factor in the death of about 1,000 Americans nationwide each month. This is unacceptable.

You should always follow posted speed limits on roadways to avoid losing control of your car. Remember, if you drive recklessly by speeding, you are not only putting yourself in danger of being involved in an accident, but other drivers, passengers and pedestrians. Your actions could have dangerous and deadly consequences.
