According to WZTV-TV, in early October, a 35-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle accident near Franklin. Reportedly, the leading up to the motorcycle crash, the 35-year-old motorcyclist was heading south on Long Lane. As he approached the Peytonville Road intersection, a man driving an SUV attempted to make left turn in front of his motorcycle, driving directly into the motorcyclist’s path in the process. The motorcycle crashed into the SUV as a result of the turn.

The motorcyclist suffered critical injuries in the wreck and died later at Williamson Medical Center. Authorities were still investigating this incident at the time of this writing.

A car or truck turning left in front of a motorcycle, like what happened in the deadly Franklin motorcycle crash, is one of the most common types of motorcycle accidents. A few other common types of motorcycle accidents include the following:

  • Head-On Collisions – Cars and trucks strike motorcycles head-on more often than from the rear.
  • Speeding – When automobile drivers speed, it can limit their ability to control their vehicle and avoid collisions with other vehicles, including motorcycles.
  • Drunk Driving – Similarly to speeding, drinking and driving limits a driver’s reaction time as well as his or her ability to handle a car or truck. As a result, drunk drivers make mistakes behind the wheel that they wouldn’t if they were sober, and many of those mistakes result in traffic accidents with other vehicles, such as motorcycles.
  • Road Hazards – Road hazards, especially, like potholes, items falling off of trucks and wet/slick spots on the road, pose a serious safety threat to motorcyclists. For instance, having to suddenly veer to avoid something falling off another vehicle, can easily lead to a motorcycle losing control and crashing.
