On October 5, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) held its 20th Annual Walk to School Day, according to the Herald Chronicle. The event is used to promote child pedestrian safety. As a part of Walk to School Day, children, teachers and parents do physical activities outdoors that allow them to have fun and learn/practice pedestrian safety skills in the process.

The Herald Chronicle article about Walk to School Day included statistics from the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security about pedestrian accidents in Tennessee this year. According to the data, as of October, there had been over 1,000 traffic accidents involving pedestrians in Tennessee in 2016 and as a result of those wrecks, 73 pedestrians had lost their lives.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY TIPS FOR AVOIDING TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS

A few tips that can help pedestrians avoid traffic accidents include:

  • If possible, wear bright clothing and reflective materials, such as reflective tape.
  • When walking at night, use a flashlight to make yourself more visible.
  • Try to only cross the street at areas that are well-lit.
  • If there’s a sidewalk available, use it.
  • If there’s not a sidewalk, always walk on the side of the road where you’re facing traffic.
  • Never assume a vehicle will stop. Instead, always make eye contact with drivers and try to make sure they see you.
  • Even if there are pedestrian signals, still look both ways before crossing the street.
  • If possible, only cross the street at designated intersections and crosswalks.
  • Avoid using cell phones, including talking, texting or listening to music, while walking.

Attorney Stanley A. Davis has been successfully representing victims of pedestrian accidents as well as other types of personal injury in Nashville, Tennessee for decades.

“I will be a pledge of his safety. From my hand you shall require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever.” Genesis 43:9
