According to WTVF-TV, one person was killed on February 23 in a single-car accident in Montgomery County, southeast of Clarksville.

The station reported that the crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m., near mile marker 13 on Interstate 24.

Troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) told the station that 48-year-old Bobby Patton, of Marion, Kentucky, was a passenger in a vehicle that was attempting to merge lanes. While attempting to avoid hitting another vehicle, 49-year-old Elizabeth Patton veered off the roadway and her vehicle overturned several times before coming to rest on the side of the interstate.

Elizabeth Patton was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. It is unclear whether Bobby died at the scene of the accident or after receiving treatment. The highway was closed for several hours while investigators worked the scene.

Overcorrecting occurs when a person over steers in reaction to an event and loses control of his or her vehicle. This action often leads to fatal accidents and rollover crashes, as drivers and passengers are ejected from vehicles or moved around sharply.

Although it may be hard, if you find yourself in a situation where you have to react quickly while driving, remember to stay calm—don’t let panic takeover your judgment. It is important to ease into any turn or movement.
