According to the Tennessean, a Hume-Fogg High School student was killed on December 19 after she was struck by a tractor-trailer in downtown Nashville.

Elena Zamora, 17, died after she was hit by a tractor-trailer as she crossed the street at the intersection of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Church Street at around 1 p.m. The accident remains under investigation.

The driver of the truck that struck Zamora, Troy Devitt, 45, has not been charged. News reports indicate that he told police that he did not see Zamora in the middle of the crosswalk when the accident occurred. She was reportedly pinned under the tractor-trailer for several minutes until rescue workers arrived.

A preliminary investigation showed that failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk was a contributing factor in the accident, according to the Tennessean. Devitt was working for Service One Transport, located in Alabama. Criminal records show he has been charged with traffic violations in at least two states, the newspaper reported.

It should be noted that there are more than 70,000 pedestrian accidents nationally each year, resulting in about 5,000 deaths, according to the Pedestrian Safety Guide and Countermeasure Selection System.
