The new outlet reported that the accident occurred on September 27, at around 12:30 a.m., near exit 62. Investigators said that the officer was responding to a crash when an SUV driven by a suspected drunk driver crashed into the side of his patrol car.

After the crash, the SUV flipped and caught fire. The suspected drunk driver was transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The officer and the driver of the vehicle he was responding to also required injury treatment.

Officials said that the SUV driver is expected to be charged with driving under the influence (DUI).

Aside from the dangers of drunk driving, officials said the accident underscores the importance of Tennessee “Move Over” laws, which require drivers to move into a different lane of traffic when they encounter emergency vehicles on the side of roadways.
