On Monday, we wrote about the fatal car accident that took the life of passenger Danielle Ivanchuk. While we cannot go back in time and prevent this tragedy, we can hopefully prevent future deaths from occurring by looking at what went wrong.

  • Seatbelt use. Both Danielle and the driver – her husband, Andrew – were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Seatbelts can reduce injury or death in car accidents by up to 45 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Additionally, seatbelt use can affect insurance payouts and litigation if the accident goes to trial.
  • Driver fatigue. Andrew reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel. When he woke to see his car drifting to the left, he overcorrected and drove the car off the right side of the road. NHTSA reports that there are approximately 56,000 accidents every year related to driver fatigue. If you notice drowsiness creeping in behind the wheel, let someone else drive or pull off the road.
  • Baby on board. Many drivers bend the rules of highway safety every now and then, but when you are driving with an infant, add an extra level of focus to your driving. Fortunately, the 3-month-old was properly secured in her car seat, and we pray she recovers from her injuries.

If you were recently involved in one or lost a loved one due to an accident, we understand how overwhelming and confusing this time period is. Give us a call – (615) 845-6141 – to see if we can help. We do not charge for the first consultation.
