So far, 2012 is on track to eclipse 2011 in terms of fatal car accidents, according to data from the state government.
There have been 554 traffic fatalities in Tennessee in 2012. A year ago, there were 525 accidents, or five percent less than in 2012. The Nashville district alone has seen a significant increase in traffic fatalities: 2012 has had 18 more deaths compared last year. Fortunately, seatbelt use has increased by seven percent.
Dayla Qualls, spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Safety, said that the weather may be a factor in the increased number of deaths.
“[W]e also saw an increase in traffic fatalities through the months of January through March this year, which we believe can be attributed to the warmer-than-usual temperatures during that time,” Qualls said.
One bit of good news: traffic deaths in the month of July were lower this year than in 2011. July 2011 saw 63 deaths, and July 2012 has so far seen 54 deaths.
To reduce lives lost on Tennesee roads, Qualls said that her department is cracking down on seatbelt use and DUI, both major factors in fatal car accidents. Deaths caused by drunk drivers increased 7.5 percent from last year. Over the 4th of July weekend, 15 people lost their lives in traffic accidents.
