Sadly, according to the Tennessee Department of Health, each year an estimated 8,000 people are hospitalized in the Volunteer State due to a brain injury.

We bring this up because March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month, aimed at raising awareness about the economic and physical affects that traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) have on victims. To celebrate the month, health and medical professionals from across the state will gather in Nashville next week to discuss TBI developments.

“Every decision and every action we make is dependent on the control center that is our brain,” said Jean Doster, director of the Tennessee Department of Health Traumatic Brain Injury program, in a statement. “TDH and the Brain Injury Association of Tennessee are hosting this event to bring additional focus on what can be done to help reduce the physical suffering and financial costs resulting from preventable brain injuries.”

Unfortunately, nationally, 5.3 million Americans are living with TBI disabilities. With this in mind, it should be noted that many TBIs are avoidable. According to the Centers for Disease Control Injury Prevention Center, the leading causes of TBI are:

  • Falls: 40.5 percent
  • Motor vehicle accidents: 14.3 percent
  • Struck by/against accidents: 15.5 percent
  • Assault: 10.7 percent

HOLDING SOMEONE LIABLE FOR A TBI

As noted, many TBIs are preventable and are the result of negligence. Injuries can occur due to car and truck accidents, slip and fall accidents, bicycle accidents and construction accidents. If you have experienced any of these incidents and have been injured, it may be in your best interest to speak to an attorney. A lawyer may be able to help you recover damages, which can help provide financial support for injury treatment.
