The kitchen becomes the heart of many Tennessee homes during the Thanksgiving holiday season. This joyous but hectic time of the year can also result in dangerous hazards and accidents in your home. Thanksgiving is the number one day for home cooking fires. U.S. fire departments responded to over 1,700 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day in 2015. In order to avoid a devastating accident, follow these safety tips.

5 ESSENTIAL FIRE SAFETY TIPS FOR THANKSGIVING DAY

  1. Don’t leave the kitchen unattended. Unattended cooking is the leading contributing factor in cooking fires on Thanksgiving. Stay in the kitchen while you are cooking anything on the stovetop. This way, you can keep an eye on the food as it is cooking. Don’t leave the kitchen or your home while you are cooking your turkey. Make sure to check on it frequently. Also, never leave a turkey fryer outside unattended.
  2. Watch children in the kitchen. Keep any young children away from the stove, hot food and liquids. Keep knives out of reach, and make sure there are no toys in the kitchen that could result in slips and falls. In general, it’s safer to not allow kids in the kitchen while you and other people are cooking.
  3. Keep the floor clear. If you do spill something while cooking, clean it up immediately. Your kitchen floor should be as clear as possible to ensure there are no slips and accidents.
  4. Be cautious of electronics and electric cords. Make sure electric cords, coffeemakers, plate warmers, or electric mixers are not dangling off the counter or plugged in near steam or liquids. An easy tip is to use something, clean it, and then put it away as soon as you’re done. This will also make the clean-up process easier.
  5. Ensure smoke alarms are working correctly. Before the big day, check that your smoke alarms are on and working. You can test them by pushing the test button that all standard smoke alarms have.
