Tragically, in a case that caught national headlines, a North Carolina church bus carrying members of a senior adult group crashed in Jefferson County, killing eight people and injuring several more.
The accident occurred on Interstate 40, and investigators determined that a blown front tire on the bus was the cause. Investigators said that something may have affected the tire prior to it blowing out.
“This tragedy was the result of blunt-force impact to the front tire that weakened its internal structure and caused the tire’s failure. There was no evidence of any pre-existing condition to the tire,” Col. Tracy Trott of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said, according to CNN.
Unfortunately, improperly sized tires, defective tires or tires that are not properly maintained are a common cause of bus and van accidents. Other common causes of van or bus accidents include driver negligence, overcrowding in the vehicle, lack of vehicle maintenance and defective equipment.
